Disk Defragmenter

Until tonight I have never had a problem with defraging. But tonite I click
on disk defragmenter and it goes through the analysis and then as it starts
to defrag it pops up an error "Disk Defragmenter NTFS Module has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I send
the error report in but there is no suggestions for resolving it. Any
suggestions???

Thanks for that information. But, after 6 hours of it NOT working, after
resting all night it works perfectly normal now. Prior to that I had tried
all the usual rebooting, scan disk, etc. but now on its own it works fine. I
did copy those instructions off to save in case I get that error again. I did
figure something had gotten corrupted. Thanks again.

There is a vague possibility that the processor or memory may be
intermittently faulty. Have you had any other software working
spasmodically?

The work of software (the use of memory and processor) peaks when the user
wants it to do something (otherwise it is just 'ticking over). Whilst
defragmenting it is working constantly. One way of testing this is to
download and run a memory checker. Not only will this test the memory but
whilst running the processor and memory a good work-out. Keep it going for,
perhaps, for as much as an hour to give it a real work-out.

Hi
As an alternative you could try the free and brilliant defragger from
Auslogics.

Note, there is no scan disk in XP, it's called chkdsk.

It sounds as though the defrag process is putting a strain on something. A
computer is not like us - do heavy work, rest, do more heavy work. It
should work or not work. There is, however, a gray area when a component is
pushed to but not quite over the point at which it falls down in a heap. In
addition to the memory and processor, the power supply unit could also be
over taxed by the defragging process. Any one could be near to being
terminally damaged. I would suggest you do a memory test (which is resource
hungry) to test this theory.
