my disk defragmenter keeps getting help up by the wuredir.cab file.
Actually, I have 2 of these files in c:windows\softwareDistribution. One was
created today and one October 2006. Should I have these files at all or just
one of them? How do I get the defrag to get past them?

This one is mostly the backup of the windows updates and you may will find
it with the extension:
wuredir.cab.bak for backup.
Do the following:
Open Windows Explorer and locate these paths:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution = Delete all Folders in the Right
Pane/Window (like download,updates..etc.)
Then this path:
C:\Windows\Temp\Temporary InternetFiles\IE.5Content = Delete all here.

Open a run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] let it run then Reboot into Safe Mode and Defrag
your system.

2... Secondly, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
For Malware download both these software:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D

Try to Repair your Windows Update Engine, to do that follow these steps to
reregister the DLLs by opening a Run Command and type these Commands
one-by-one and click [Enter] or [OK]:
regsvr32 atl.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 inetcomm.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 cryptsvc.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv

Then Restart your machine and try the windows Update website.
HTH.
