Disk Defragmenter utility will not run Need Help

System description: Toshiba satellite P105 with Wndows XP SP2 installed RAM =
1GB
This is a relatively new laptop (6 months) that I am unable to run the
diskdefrag utility on.
When I try to run the utility I recieve the error message "Disk defragmenter
has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume:SQ004047P00 (C).
Please run chkdsk /f.
When I attempt to run chkdsk /f I recieve the following error message:
"The type of system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

I have selected both options (Y/N) and restarted the sytem with no apparant
effect. There seems to be no time lag when the system restarts so I question
whether chkdsk is even run at the start (assuming that it takes a minute or
two to run).
I have tried to run chkdsk from the run command line but the window
immediately closes when I hit the enter key (operator error?)
I tried a "cold restart" where I shut the machine down completely with no
apparant success.
I would greatly appreciate any advice/links/help etc. I am not very computer
literate.

Thanks,
Bob

You've got Norton/Symantec installed, don't you.

Try booting to Safe mode and doing the scandisk/defrag

Thank you, I did try that and received the exact same error messages, both with the disk defragmenter utility and when trying to run check disc via the run command. I do not have any norton programs installed (to the best of my knowledge). The machine was purchased from Comp USA and has McAfee Security Center installed on it. Of possible interest was that when I selected safe mode the machine went through a series of DOS prompts and than took about 5-10 minutes to get into safe mode. As a matter of fact I thought that it was frozen. (As I said I'm not extremely smart about computers and these type of problems). I am open to any further suggestions. Again Thank you for your quick reply.
