Disk Defragmenter/Goback

I just downloaded and used a trial version of Executive Software's
Diskeeper 8 Pro on my Win XP Pro system. It defragged fine, but I'm
wondering whether it's worthwhile to get a 3rd party disk defragmenter.
Would a 3rd party defragger be much, if any, of an improvement over Win
XP's built-in defragger (which I've never used)? (According to
Execsoft, a WinXp Pro system would require the Pro version of Diskeeper
which costs $50!)

I use Goback 3 by Roxio (now Symantec) on my system and would not want
to be without it. So, I'm particularly, interested in finding a
defragger that would not erase my Goback history file. Although many
defraggers claim to allow you to "protect" the gobackio.bin file, all of
the one's I've tried have trashed the history file after a defrag.

Any help with these defragger questions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

And exactly how does one prove that any one defrag tool do a better job than
any other? Keep your money! If I were in t6he business of selling you
something to make a living, OF COURSE what I am trying to sell is the best
that can be found.

So you have tried various defrag programs that trash the GoBack history file. Do you also use Symantec's SystemWorks? It uses a proprietary defrag and I am interested if that is one that will also trash the GoBack file. I don't use GoBack, but I have considered trying it. Let us know what defrag programs you have tried. I have found that they all are too slow. I miss the days of a DOS clean boot, with no unnecessary drivers and utitlies running.

Yes, I have tried Symantec's defragger, although not the current one. I had last year's version of System Works on my system, along with the version of Goback bundled with it (which is not the full version, by the way), and it trashed the history file, as well.

My gut feeling exactly. But if I find one that plays nicely with Goback, they
might have a sale anyway.

Thanks for your thoughts.

GoBack is designed to do that! Suggest you read about the theory of how
GoBack operates. What you see is a result of GoBack programming code and
normal GoBack designed operation, and not of any defragmenter "trashing" the
GoBack history.

Look under the GoBack FAQ's. If GoBack's history were allowed to keep
functioning during a defrag, the total amount of the allocated GoBack .bin
space would be consumed with the defrag information. Plus, the computer
would be knocked to it knees, speed wise, no matter how fast the computer
is.

Hello,I beleive that GoBack will always have a problem with a
defragmenter.
The amount of information and the changes being made cause a overflow
problem.
I think GoBack needs access all the time or the time frame change will
cause a problem.
GoBack at one time had a information bulletin concerning this type of
action that was before Roxio and Norton.
Before I use defragmenter I clean up the system, reboot and disable
GoBack(this removes all history)GoBack reboots then ask to be
restarted, click no and run defrag after defrag enable GoBack.I defrag
about every three weeks at a time when all updates and any programs
have been added or removed and the system seems stable.
I am glad to know that GoBack works with WindowsXP.I recently
purchased a computer with WindowsXP and will install GoBack.
The MVP's seem to recommend using only one defragmenter as they all
seem to work a little differently.
Take Care.
