Hello, when I Run windows XP Disk cleanup, does not seem to be working as it
starts the process, calculating: compress old files....will not advance from
there....has been running for about 10 minutes on that section but does not
go any further, my question is: how long does it take to calculate this
section so I Can cleanup everything?

The longer you leave it the longer it takes to run. If I remember to run it
weekly it takes about 5 minutes. Usually I forget and run it monthly then
it takes ages. I can't say how long as I just leave it to run while I get
on with other things. If you haven't let it finish then perhaps you have
lots to clean up!

Disk Cleanup hanging on "compressing old files" is a known issue. The
way to get around it is to disable that option in the registry. If you
are comfortable working in the registry, here is the key to delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explore
\VolumeCaches\CompressOldFiles.

If you would rather have a more automatic way of doing this, Kelly has a
fix you can download on her excellent site here:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm

She has a *lot* of information, so you'll need to look around. Perhaps
you should start in her Top Ten list or under "D" in XP Alphabetically.

My problem is quite recent. I have 2 HD's and when
performing Disk Cleanup on one, it works perfectly, but
on the other, it seems to freeze-up. It works perfectly
on the 40Gb drive, but not on the 80Gb one. On the 80Gb,
it starts calculating cpmpressed files and will stay like
that for up to 4hrs, the longest I have let it go until
terminating the task.

Anyone else with a similar problem?

Have you figured out what can be wrong with the Disk
Cleanup? I have a situation where I have 2 hard drives.
Disk Cleanup works perfectly with one, but with the other
one, it freezes. I have even left it overnight and it's
completely frozen.

Disk Cleanup freezes during the Compressed File Phase: This edit corrects
the problem:

Disk Cleanup - Compressed Old Files Freezes (Line 48)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
