Disk cleanup

Suddenly when I run disk cleanup it runs and runs but
does not finish. I have to cancel and stop it in task
manager. How can I get this fixed. It appears to be
corrupted or something.

generally the process is slow.
That's common.Take it easy.
It happened when your disk contain too many junk files.

Compressing files can, if there's a lot of them and you don't have a
super fast cpu, take like an hour or more. Compressing files, depending
on what kind of files you have on your computer, is more or less
worthless. Actually deleting stuff will save more space then
compressing will. Its not necessary and it certainly doesn't cleanup
your drive.
I keep it unchecked when running disk cleanup.

I am having the very same problem. I even re-installed
windows xp and it is still doing that. I tried the link
above also and it is still stopping on compress old
files. I let the program run all night last night and it
still didn't finish. I checked the task manager when I
woke up and it said it was still running and not the "not
responding" message so it seems like it is just running
in a loop. Can anyone help fix this for us? Thanks

You may want to try changing the age of the files that are tagged for
compression. Select "Compress Old Files" in Disk Cleanup and click
[Options]. The default age is 50 days, I have mine set at the maximum
500 days.
But really, compress old files is not worth the trouble turn it off.

On the other hand if you're having problems compressing files you may
want to run a scan disk and make sure your file system is healthy.
The compress files is heavily dependent on the speed of your processor;
so how much is it trying to compress and how fast is your CPU?

Go to this web site,
www.theeldergeek.com/disk_cleanup_utility.htm
at the bottom of the page is a link to fix hang up while
running compressed old files. Go there and follow the
instructions. It was a pain but it worked and now I can
run disk clean up without any hangs at all. Hope this
helps
