disk cleanup trouble

Everytime my disk cleanup finishes my CPU usage is at
100%, and everything I try to do on my computer lags. In
the task manager I see that nothing is running that
shouldn't be. What I'm wondering is WHY disk cleanup
makes my computer lag/maximize CPU usage, and is there a
way to keep it form doing that?
