disk cleanup problems

Hello,

I am trying to use disk cleanup on my C drive, but while it is scanning the drive, it freezes before it is finished with compressing old files. Plus, when I cancel disk cleanup, my PC runs extremely slow, and I have to restart the PC. I have done disk cleanup on this PC before and have not had problems. Also, I tried doing disk cleanup on my D drive and it worked fine. I tried system restore also, but evidentally the problem has been on my PC for awhile, since I still had problems with it when I restored the PC to its oldest restore point. What do I need to do to fix this problem?
