1) the root web does not have to be protected, but the registration page must be in the root web
- the self registration controls a protected subweb
(read the instructions in the user registration page template)
Also make sure you are on a Unix Host that supports subwebs w/ unique permissions
2) whether you protect it or not, make the DW a subweb or your root web publishing will eventually corrupt it (overwriting posts)

| to sell vintage beads and beaded jewelry. We thought it would also be nice
| to add a discussion group since we would be getting traffic from people who
| bead and are interested in beaded jewelry. I don't want customers to have to
| register to look at our products. I will have to think this over and maybe
| just open up the discussion page to anyone, although I'm afraid of trolls (I
| think that's what they call the idiots who flood newsgroups with unrelated
