Disconnected User Account?

J

Jeremy

I am currently running XP pro and have recently had a
little mishap. While logged into the main user account
(actually no guest account was ever created), someone hit
ctrl-alt-del to get into the Windows Task Manager and
accidentally hit the Disconnect User button. Ever since I
have not been able to log into my computer because the
disconnected user was the ONLY user. Upon start-up the
computer goes to a blue WindowsXP pro screen. Is there
anyway to get around this without reformatting and if
not, does anyone if I would be able to access the files
on my computer and create a backup before reformatting.
Thanks.

Hi

If you can get to the Welcome screen, try accessing the PC by using the
Administrator's Account - press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice at the Welcome screen.

Thanks for the quick response.

Actually, I believe that the disconnected User, was the
Administrator's account. (I am using XP Professional at
home, so there was no real need for a second account.
Until now.) The blue screen that my computer presently
stops at is the blue "loading" screen with dark blue top
and bottom boarders, light blue center stripe, and the
windows ensignia off center to the right hand side. I
believe that this screen is usually followed by the
Welcome screen. Thanks.

Hi

Have you tried 'Last Known Good Configuration' - reboot and then keep
tapping the F8 key. If that doesn't work try accessing the same screen
again and this time try Safe Mode for a System Restore.

Using the 'Last Know Good Configuration' gives the same
result. I had not tried Safe Mode, but when I did, it
would not boot up. Initially upon selecting Safe Mode, it
gave a bunch of script (the first half of each line
unrecongnizable to me and the second half containing what
I believe to be a file name), it would then restart and
give me the message that Windows could not start
properly.... thereby giving me the choice to go into Safe
Mode and also creating a loop of failure. I hope that you
have another suggestion. Thanks.

Hi

If those last two options didn't work, you will have to look towards a
'Repair' install of XP. Unfortunately this will mean
re-downloading/re-installing the Windows Updates:

"How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install"
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Your files, programs and settings should remain intact, but you may like to
backup all your valuable data files beforehand.

Here is an example of one file name that comes up upon
Safe Mode start up...

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32
\Drivers\Mountmgr.sys

Thanks.
