Hi
If those last two options didn't work, you will have to look towards a
'Repair' install of XP. Unfortunately this will mean
re-downloading/re-installing the Windows Updates:

Your files, programs and settings should remain intact, but you may like to
backup all your valuable data files beforehand.

| Using the 'Last Know Good Configuration' gives the same
| result. I had not tried Safe Mode, but when I did, it
| would not boot up. Initially upon selecting Safe Mode, it
| gave a bunch of script (the first half of each line
| unrecongnizable to me and the second half containing what
| I believe to be a file name), it would then restart and
| give me the message that Windows could not start
| properly.... thereby giving me the choice to go into Safe
| Mode and also creating a loop of failure. I hope that you
