disappearing text and other problems with word 2007

I'm new to using word, and I don't know what happened. I was typing a
practice letter on Word 2007 (I'm still learning how to type) and halfway
through, all of my text disappeared, and the paragraph marker was at the
middle of the top of the page. There were numerous times when I would hear a
beep and the typing would stop showing on the page, until I clicked the spot
with my mouse where I wanted to type, and then I could continue. Also when I
finished the first line of the first paragraph, the next line started near
the middle of the page, instead of at the margin, and when I retried it, it
just happened again.
I know that as a new typist I will make mistakes, but I have no idea how
these things happened, and I need them to work right if I'm to be able to
continue in school. I can't believe that there is a key function that I may
have accidentally hit that would cause me to lose all of my text, but if
something so ridiculous is in this program I sure need to know which key to
pry from my keyboard to prevent it from happening again. By the way if you
need to know I was doing this on my stupid dell inspiron 1545 laptop.
Thank you,
Joseph

This isn't an Access (database) issue, but I wonder if you're
inadvertantly brushing the touchpad with your thumb? When something
wacky happens, try the Control-Z (undo) combination one or more times.
