Disappearing Quick Launch bar

Windows XP Professional (SP2) IBM Laptop T-40 series. Why does the Quick
Launch bar disappear every so often? I have checked out the registry "fix"
that is on Google; not the answer. One time that I can guarantee it will
disappear is when the Microsoft Update Security Patches are installed; like
the ones yesterday. Sure would like to get this resolved, because this is the
"bosses" laptop and he doesn't understand why it is only happening to him and
only occasionally.
