Disappearing firewire drive

JBM

I have two computers on has a A7N8X-Deluxe MB
the other has a P4C800-Deluxe MB. I bought an
external firewire/USB 2.0 case and a 200 GB HD
to use for backup. On the A7N8X it works good
but on the P4C800 the drive disappears during
backup. And I have to turn the drive off an on or
pullout and reinsert the firewire cable.
I'm using BIOS 1014 and 3.13 Nforce drivers.
Anyone else having this problem?
Any ideas?

Thanks

Same here. I thought it was just a cheap drive I bought (ACOM Data). I
would start copying files to the drive, and it would just lock up.
Fortunately, the drive also has a USB 2 interface, so that is working just
fine. P4C800 Dlx by the way. I also noticed it losing it's connection
when transfering digital video. And, yes, I tried several fire wire cables.

I noticed the samething USB2.0 works on the P4C800 but
firewire doesn't. It's just the opposite on my A7N8X as
far as using my external drive. I haven't tried tranfering
digital video.

Hi there,

There is an issue for some people with the onboard P4C800 Deluxe firewire
port and DVD cameras it could be related see Paul's post 27/10/03 17.38.
Most people I know with this board use a PCI Firewire card and all works
well just an issue with the onboard VIA Firewire.

Tim.

Thanks Tim. I'll look into that. It's kind of disappointing when you buy
what you think is a premium MB and find it still has bugs in it. I later
purchased a new sound blaster audigy card and that had fire wire port that
seemed to work fine. I wounder if ASUS will give me a few bucks back for
the firewire that I paid for but didn't get :)

Hey, that's interesting to me. I'm building a new system on the A7N8X
and noticed that a cheap USB drive (USLOGIC 60gig) is recognized as
being attached (the little arrow thingie shows up in the tray) but it
doesn't show up in My Computer or Explorer. I was thinking that maybe
it was because I'm using Win2003 Server and needed different drivers
but maybe it's the board. Oddly enough, the USLOGIC website doesn't
mention this drive. I've been meaning to call them but they're on the
west coast (I'm in NY) so by the time they open I forget about it.
Maybe today...

My USB thumb drive is recognized just fine on the A7N8X.

Have you ran the disk management console and
assigned a drive letter to your USB drive?

Thanks,

I have an Audigy sound card that I was going to sell
on eBay. I guess I'll install that an see if it fixes my problem.

No. Sure sounds like something I should do. Thanks. Somewhere in
Administrative tools I guess. Oh, turns out that USLogic is another
company. This USLogic drive is made by ACOMDATA.

Yes

management.

I fixed my problem with firewire by installing
the MB in a different case. It has a cable to
attach to the internal header. I wasn't able to
use my firewire drive at all. Now I've made three
backups on each port with no problems.
