Disappearing Computer on WinXP

Hi

I am new on this newsgroup, having been pointed here by Hans-Georg Michna's
excellent web site at http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm - this is also my
first time on ANY newsgroup, so please forgive any lapses or idiocies.

Despite the beautifully designed diagnostic page, I have not found the
solution to my problem. The web page suggests that I copy and include the
following text:

Selections: ip=1 computers_or_shares_missing=1 connect_as=1

I have a wired LAN connecting 4 computers, using two network hubs (neither
of them Linksys!).

- Toshiba Satellite laptpop running XP Home.this is the machine with
the problem.

- Samsung X05 laptop running XP Pro

- Advent PC running XP Home.this machine is the gateway and has the
internet connection.

- Home built PC (very old) running 98SE

The network runs fine except for one irritating feature.when the Toshiba is
booted up, everything is fine, but after a short period, the computer can no
longer be seen in Windows Explorer under My Network Places/Microsoft Windows
Network/(Workgroup Name).

Despite this, I can still use Internet Connection Sharing. From the Command
Prompt, Ping still works from the other machines. Ditto Net View. In
Windows Explorer, I can still view mapped drives on the Toshiba from other
machines. And while the Computername is still briefly visible, I created a
shortcut to it on the desktop of one of the other machines.and that still
works, even after the Computername disappears.

Nor can the Toshiba see itself in Windows Explorer under My Network Places.

Does anyone have any suggestions, please? My skill level with computers is
experienced beginner!! I am self taught, only learning what I need to learn
in order to achieve a goal. For example, I built the old PC mentioned
several years ago, but I have more or less move onto other things now and
view computers as tools rather than the hobby it used to be. Because I am
self taught, I suspect that there are gaps in my knowledge in some
unexpected places!!!

I would very much welcome any advice you can give me, please?

Oh.and AOL has never been allowed anywhere near my machines!!!

In hope

I have a similar problem with a Dell notebook running Win XP Pro SP2 and
Norton Internet Security firewall (Windows firewall disabled). I've given up
trying to find out why it disappears from the workgroup list because it just
doesn't matter. All network functions including file and printer sharing and
internet connection sharing all work just fine whether the machine is in the
workgroup listing or not. If you do hit upon a solution, I'd be interested to
know what it is, but I suggest you don't worry about it.

OK, thanks for that, KK. At least I now know I am not alone!!

It was just irritating to have to have to go to my partner's machine and map
the drive for her, just because she couldn't see the files on my machine.
