disable/uninstall remote assistance

Hi folks,

I was wondering if there was a way to disable or remove the remote
assistance feature from XP. I've already blocked TCP port 3389 but that did
not provide the desired results. Basically I want to prevent even accidental
acceptance of remote assistance from outside my network. Blocking TCP port
3389 appears to have caused the following result:

My XP Home laptop could request RA from my XP Pro laptop. Once connection
was established, the XP Pro laptop could take control of the XP Home laptop.
So it seems nothing is blocked at all. On the other hand,

When my XP Pro requested remote assistance from the XP Home laptop the
connection could not be established.

Firewall is provided within my SMC7004VWBR wireless router, so I expected
that since both laptops are on the same network both would be blocked from
making the request for remote assistance.

So, can I block or remove this service completely?

Thanks,
Paul Nixon

Fortunately (yes ,fortunately) you can't remove it as it is part of the
Operating System Windows XP.

Sure you can DISABLE it.

Right click on My computer - Properties
click on the REMOTE tab and then uncheck everything. This service is now
disabled.

Also ,I strongly recommend you use the built in Windows Firewall in XP SP2
so that you can block Remote services from there.Using Windows Firewall with
Don't allow exceptions guarantees you MAXIMUM protection agains unwanted
incoming traffic as it blocks all the incomong bad.
