Disable messanger account

Hi,
Relatives kids opened a session in messenger under their account and now it
will not disable.
I searched this group and did all that was reported to disable the icon
(unchecking the two boxes and rebooting), but it still appears.
It comes, in as an icon when Outlook opens. When I sign out, it signs in at
will on certain mouse moves.
I'd like any advice as to what I can do next to simply disable what the kids
have done.

TIA

TIA

Greetings Gerry,

Easily. Just click the Start Button, then click the Control Panel. Then, click User Accounts
in the Control Panel. Select the Windows account name in question, and then on the left side
of the screen, under Related Tasks, click 'Manage my Network Passwords'. In the window that
opens, click the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and click 'Remove'.

Then right-click the icon and choose Exit.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks for the info, however, there is no user account in that area that
relates to the Windows Messanger account. I cannot disable this at this
location.

I wonder if it is within the WM environment where I can logon as a different
user!

The status of the icon connects anytime during Outlook sessions even when I
check off sign out.

What can I do?

Hi,

If you have a saved Passport, it will be in that dialog, under Passport.Net\* (Passport),
that's all you have to look for.

The only exception to this is if you're running Windows Messenger in compatibility mode. To
check, click Start, then Run, type "%programfiles%\Messenger" and click OK. Right click on
msmsgs, choose Properties and then click the Compatibility tab. Make sure nothing is checked
and then click OK.

As for Outlook, for Outlook 2003, click the Tools menu in Outlook, then choose Options,
choose the Other tab, uncheck "Enable the Person Names Smart Tag" and click OK.

For Outlook 2002/XP, open Outlook, click the Tools menu, then Options, then the Other tab,
and uncheck 'Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook'.

For Outlook Express, close Outlook Express, then download and run this .reg file:

That did it! (As per the Outlook 2002/XP instructions)

Your time is very much appreciated, and I was able to learn something new!

Thanks Jonathan!

Hi,

I'm experiencing the same kind of problem, but when i select the
Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry and press the 'Remove' button nothing happens
(the netry blinks and that's about it). Even though i have administrator
rights (Using a Dutch Windows XP Home) and messenger isn't running...
I'm not using Outlook...

So what could be wrong here,

Thanks

Pieter

Hi Pieter,

This isn't your problem, this is a bug in the Dutch version of Windows XP that's never been
fixed. It is fixable on your own if you don't mind hex editing and getting around XP's DLL
security.

Could you be specific about what your problem is specifically, then I can give you a decent
workaround.

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for the quick reply, this is what try I do:
(I want to delete the Passport.Net\* (Passport) entry, because I do not want
messenger to 'autologin')

1) I'm logged in as the User with the .NET Passport (this user has
administrator rights so I should be able to modify everything i want)
2) Through control panel > user accounts I select the user in question
(which is the current user)
3) Then I click manage my network passwords, a window opens, it shows 2
entries of which one is Passport.Net\* and the other is my hotmail account.
The window has a remove, properties and close button.
4) When i select the Passport.Net\* account entry and press the remove
button nothing happens. (the button shows the default onclick behaviour but
the entry Passport.Net\* isn't being removed).

Have I provided you with enough information?

I don't mind if I have to do some hex editing to fix this :D

Thanks,

Pieter
