I have recently upgraded to DirectX 9. I think that my computer is having
problems with this and I cannot figure out how to downgrade back to version
8. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance......Greg

you can't downgrade, just delete verion 9 and go on the internet and try to
find version 8

Just "delete" version 9? Perhaps you should elaborate or instruct the
poster on how one just deletes DirextX. I'm sure a few are interested
to find out how you do that.

Greg;

As you already know DirectX is not uninstallable, at least not in any
way that Microsoft officially supports. DirectX is somewhat of a core
Windows components and there are no rollback methods offered by
Microsoft. All hope is not lost however, many suffer ill effect
upgrading DirectX and some have written useful utilities to deal with
issues like the one you face.

Here a three of the most trusted DirectX removal utilities:

Download: DirectX 9 Uninstaller
http://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/directx-dx9uninstaller.php
(German page - The only one of my suggestions that actually touts itself
as being able to remove dx9)

DirectX Busters:
http://www.dxbuster.de/index_e.html
The grand daddy of DirectX uninstaller, very well respected. DirextX
Buster does not claim to be able to remove dx9 but says that it may work
and many say that it does. Up to you to read and decide. Older
versions of DirectX are available there for download.

DirectX Eradicator
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Security/Secure-cleaning/DirectX-Eradicator.shtml
A relatively new kid on the block but apparently is able to remove dx9
successfully.

BE SURE to read ALL the instructions and notes supplied with the utility
.. Removing DirectX can be a breeze or it can be a total disaster! Be
prepared. Before you use these utilities make sure that you have an up
to date Emergency Repair Disk. When removing DirectX make sure that ALL
unnecessary programs and services are turned off. If you experience
difficulties the folks in the DirectX group may be able to offer proper
advice and help, one of these should connect you to the group:

Good luck;

Once you've upgraded DirectX, the only way to revert to an earlier
version is to format the hard drive and reinstall the OS. This is
explained on the Microsoft DirectX web site from which you downloaded
the installation.

What specific problems are you experiencing? Have you checked with the
computer components' various (usually video and audio) device
manufacturers to see if newer, DirectX9-compatible drivers are available?

Once you've upgraded DirectX, the only way to revert to an earlier
version is to format the hard drive and reinstall the OS, unless you've
created a restore point, which Win2K cannot do. This is explained on
the Microsoft DirectX web site from which the installation file is
downloaded.
