Directory Service Event Viewer log "Empty"

D

David Kepke

For some reason, both our DC's rebooted. When they came
back up, no obvious reason could be found for the
reboots. These servers have been up for approx 45 days
before this incident. When they came back up, one of the
DC's Directory Service Event Logs displayed no events in
the right pane. It sounds like an index problem since the
other DC's DS Event log is fine and reports no replication
errors. The problem DC's Event log states that it has
over 2000 entries, but they are not displayed. You can
right click on the blank entries and select properties,
but a dialog comes up and states that "properties are not
available for this object" (paraphrased). I have made
sure there are no filters applied to the log. I have not
yet had a chance to reboot, but I will try that at a more
convenient time for my users. I hope a reboot fixes it,
because I cannot find anyone who has had this problem on
this web site or google.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to take a stab at
this.

David,

I think that we might want to find out why your DCs rebooted. Obviously the
log files would be a huge help in determining this. However, there might be
a few other tools that can help you.

Two choices here: Support Tools or MPSRPT_DirSvc ( aka Directory Health ).
The Support Tools are a collection of utilities that you, the Admin, can
install and run individually on all of your WIN2000 Servers. The
MPSRPT_DirSvc ( which is actually one of something like 12 possibilities )
is essentially a nice collection of many tools wrapped into one. It will
run a lot of the tests for you that you could individually run after you
install the Support Tools. It will also give you all of your log files!!!!
This might be of use?!?!

The Support Tools are located in two locations: on the WIN2000 Server CD in
the Support | Tools folder and on the WIN2000 Service Pack CD in the Support
| Tools folder. Always opt for the Service Pack CD where possible.

The MPSRPT_DirSvc is located at the following URL, err, actually I can not
find that link right now. I hope that someone else can pick me up on this
one....

I will continue to look for it.

HTH,

Cary
