directory problem?

Hello All was wondering if anyone out there could help lead me in the right
direction. I have a windows xp machine that when you try to connect to the
WMI control (in management console), it gives you a error that says
"connection to wmi failed: Access denied". When I check my event logs, I am
getting the follow error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1090
Date: 10/24/2005
Time: 9:19:15 AM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: WS326
Description:
Windows couldn't log the RSoP (Resultant Set of Policies) session status. An
attempt to connect to WMI failed. No more RSoP logging will be done for this
application of policy.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I have tried the rsop.msc command as the website instructs me to do, but get
a "Group Policy Error, Failed to connect: Access Denied" when I try to
register the userenv.dll.

I'm not sure which direction to go. Can you give me some advice?

Thanks!

Do you have limited or complete access to the computer? i.e. are you an
administrator or not? if no then you cannot perform security tasks or change
them in your computer. Ask someone who has administrator priveleges. and then
try to connect to wmi.

Definition of WMI:
Acronym for Windows Management Instrumentation. WMI is a new management
technology allowing scripts to monitor and control managed resources
throughout the network. Resources include hard drives, file systems,
operating system settings, processes, services, shares, registry settings,
networking components, event logs, users, and groups. WMI is built into
clients with Windows 2000 or above, and can be installed on any other 32-bit
Windows client.

Yes, I am logged on as administrator, but still cannot connect. When I try
to do a gpupdate, I get the rsop error in my event logs.

Have you verified that the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service is
running and that there are no additional errors about WMI logged in the Event
Log?

did you install/delete/rename/create/moved... etc, any particular program or
a file? try to roll back to a day it was working, if same error exists, then
something is serious.

Yes, it is running. I am not seeing any additional errors, only the rsop
error listed above. I first caught the problem when my security updates
(wsus) would not install, and I would get the same rsop error.

I also have exactly the same problem you have described. Did you ever find a
solution. Driving me crazy (short drive)
