Direct Parallel Cable Connection

Hi, I want to make a Direct Cable Connection with my
laptop using a parallel cable. I want to use this desktop
as the host. Does this desktop need to be connected to a
network in order for me to make a Direct Cable Connection
with my laptop?
Using the New Connection Wizard in Windows XP, I followed
the steps to set up a Direct Cable Connection but
received an Incoming Connection Warning message saying
that "Incoming Connections depend on the Routing and
Remote Access service which was unable to start. For more
information, check the system event log."
In the Event Viewer there is an entry from the Service
Control Manager with an Event ID: 7002 and
description: "The Routing and Remote Access service
depends on the NetBIOSGroup group and no member of this
group started."

Would really appreciate if you could please tell me where
the problem is and how I could make a successful Direct
Parallel Cable Connection.
Thanks a lot for any information in advance.
