This seems a completely straightforward connection -- how can it not work?
Desktop connected directly to laptop by parallel cable. Both systems running
XP Pro, with fairly fresh installations on both. Have run (many time) network
connections wizard, specifying desktop as host, laptop as guest.
The machines connect fine on a SLIP connection. But whenever I try to do the
normal PPP connection, error 733 appears. This error says that the computers
could not negotiate PPP control protocols.
I've tried sequentially altering all of the PPP settings on my laptop:
- Enable LCP extensions
- Enable software compression
- Negotiate multi-link for single-link connections
No combination of alterations of these settings gets rid of the error message.
Have tried any number of other solutions, including adding (and then
removing) extra protocols, taking down the firewalls -- everything I can
think of. Nothing works.
Many hours wasted, exasperation mounting. Can anyone please help?
Thanks very much!
