Direct Cable Connection between two laptops

Hi, I'm tryin to transfer a whole load of files from one computer to another,
but the problem is I don't have a CD burner for the one computer where I'm
taking off all the files from. Is there any way I could use a network cable
to connect the two computers together, and send files that way? I Remember in
98 there used to be a file called "Direct Cable Connection" or something like
that. Is there an equivalent for XP today?

Yes, you can build or purchase a CAT-5 cable that is similar to the old
"null modem cable" that was used to connect serial ports - the difference
now would be RJ45 (NIC) ports.
