Dimage Scan Elite 5400 II: Q re saving a colour negative

When scanning a colour negative I notice that at first the index display shows positive images
that are somewhat anaemic. Then all images are adjusted and the colour now looks much better.

When I then save the images (as is with no further adjustments) they are saved as negatives
rather than as the positive that are displayed. Can I save the positive images instead?

Furthermore, loading the saved TIFs (and inverting) I see that they are as pale as the
initial scan was showing rather than the more natural final displayed images.

What I want is to access the images as they are shown in the index display in DSU (positive
and colouful), this is not a question about how to later process the saved images.

TIA

The film Scanner has two "scans" the preview and the Scan. Preview is done
first, to set the settings before the final scan.

For Color Negatives:
You have to scan the film using the Color Negative setting into a Photo
editor.
The photo editor has a save for the image.

If you do not have a photo editor, download Irfanview and Plug-ins.

I found this on line, has some details about using the 5400 film scanner.

The preview itself has two phases. It initially shows the images in a reasonably
drab colour, and then the full colour is adjusted (you can see this happening and
there is a progress popup too).

I do not see an option in DSU to scan into an editor. Mmm. I fired up Photoshop
Elements, came with the scanner, and I see that it can source from the scanner.

[later]
This is no better than saving to disk and then opening it in Elements.
The fetched image is a negative and *not* a positive looking like the image
DSU is showing.

I know that I can fiddle with the editor and get a nice image but I would
rather start with what DSU is showing me in the first place.

Any ideas?

You must not be using the correct film profile.

There is Positive Film and Negative Film.

Positive Film is like Slides in that when you hold the film up to a light,
you see a normal color image.
Negative film is a image that is the reverse, in black and white film the
whites are black on negative and blacks are the lighter areas of the film.

In the scanner you must choose what kind of film you are scanning.

Negative film for negative film and positive for positive for positive.

If you have not gotten the user manual for the Dimage Scan Elite 5400 II,
you can download it here.
http://ca.konicaminolta.com/support/manuals/scanners/dimage-scanners/index.html

I downloaded the English (3,483KB) under Scan Elite 5400 II.
You want DSE5400-2_OM_E_.pdf

Start reading at Page 17 of the above PDF file, Film Type Setup continue
through to Page 19 Making the final scan.

The answer, as I found out by much trying, is that "16bit linear" always
saves the raw scan but "16bit" does save the print format as I want.

This is explained in the full 76 page document, a point lost on me at the time.

cheers
Eyal

n.b. I am referring to a document
DS_Elite5400_2_E.pdf
the source of which I forgot, and *not* to
DSE5400-2_OM_E_.pdf
which was mentioned in this thread and is available from
