Digitizing 8mm camcorder cassettes

Hi there,

I'm would like to convert my aging 8mm camcorder cassettes to .mpg. I have
captured them at 640 x 480 VBR 8000bits/s so far. I realized that there
might be the possibility that I may be capturing at too high a resolution.
My question is 640 x 480 to high? The analog camcorder recorders at so many
lines of resolution, although I'm not sure what that is. Am I wasting my
time generating a large file for my tapes?

Can anyone recommend the best possible capture I should use?
