Difficulty using SCANNER

R

Roger

I have a Visioneer 4800 USB scanner which is about two
years old which I purchased at the same time as my
Paclkard Bell PC which runs on Windows XP.
The scanner came bundled with Paperport 7.0 Deluxe
software.
The scanner has never been continually connected to the
computer because of limited desk space and only connected
when required.

This mode of operation worked satisfactorily. Recently
however the scanner has failed and when I
clicked/selected the "Twain" device in any sofware (the
scanner has been used in Paperport, but was used mostly
in Microsoft Word and Photosuite) it has caused the
computer to freeze to the extent that nothing not even
Task Manager would work and it required re-booting to
work satisfactorily.
Thinking the Paperport sofware was at fault I removed it
from my computer and re-installed it. However this has
not improved matters and the computer still freezes. On
re-installation however the software requires me to
select "Scan Manager" to run the scanner, but Scan
Manager does not appear in the selection box. Previoulsy
when the scanner was working OK it always used Scan
Manager.
I have used the search facility but cannot find a file
called "Scan Manager" (or similar) and am concerned that
I may have accidently removed it while trying to resolve
my difficulties, and that this is now why the scanner
will not function. Therefore, a) do you think this could
be the cause of my problem and how do I check? and, b) is
it possible to download a copy of the appropriate file(s)

Anyone any ideas?

Did you re-install the software/driver with the scanner connected? If
so, uninstall the software/driver, unplug the scanner, re-install the
softare/driver and then plug in the scanner.

If not go to the website of the scanner maker and see if they have an
updated driver for it. Most USB devices need the driver instaled with
the unit not connected.
