When I write a message and do a spell check, the computer tells me a word,
that I know for a fact is correct, is spelt wrong and suggests a replacement
word, that I have never heard of. Does anyone know how to fix this? I'm new
at the computer and have trouble finding my way around yet. I am running
Microsoft XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Why don't you give some examples of the words that are incorrectly flagged
as spelled wrong as well as the suggested replacements? In addition, you
should let us know the word processor you are using (name and version
number). Also what language settings are you using, UK, American, or some
other location for English.

Microsoft XP is an operating system, and does not contain a word processor
or dictionary.
Microsoft Works contains a word processor with a dictionary.
Microsoft Word is a word processor that also contains a dictionary.

In what program? It's the application program that does the spell
check, not Windows.

What word is it? In any program, the list of words it recognizes is
limited. You almost certainly know some words that it doesn't. If I
type "syzygy" here, the program I am typing it in (Agent) flags it as
an error, even though I know it's spelled right. It simply doesn't
have the word "syzygy" in its dictionary. But almost every program
will let you add words to its dictionary.

"Spelt" is the standard way those in the UK spell what we in the US
spell "spelled."

For some reason, although the spelling differences in words like
"honor" and "honour" are well know, many people are unaware of this
one.

However, in both the US and the UK, the word I misspelled (or
misspelt?) as "know" in the above sentence is properly spelled (or
spelt) "known." ;-)

WindowsXP does not have a dictionary or a spelling checker.

Some examples, and corrections of words are:(My word is first, then some
spelling suggestions.
wants= watts,cants,gants,nants
examples==exemples,ex
words= ords, bords, Word,lords,mords
so= soc ,soi, sol, son, sot, su, os
send= svend, end, sent, zend, zed
some= somme, soma, sommai,sommer

Where do I find the name the name and version of the word processor?

There is definitely a problem with either the language in the word
processor, or in the dictionary settings within the word processor. While
you are correct that all of your words that are being flagged are spelled
correctly, the words that are being offered as replacements seem to be in
another language. In order to further assist you, we will need to know what
program you're using for the word processor.
Best of luck,

Where do you find the name of the word processor? Well, what program do you
start to type in words?

My guess is that the language for the dictionary is set to French. Google
Translate (French to English) returns

| wants = Watts, cants, gloves, nants
| examples = exemples, ex
| words = ords, edges, Word, Lords, bite
| so = ploughshare, oneself, ground, its, stupid, known, bone
| send = svend, end, feel, zend, zed
| some = nap, soma, summoned, to summon

for your list of examples. The program you use for word processing (or for
spell checking) will have settings for language.

It would clearly seem that you are using a dictionary in some language
other than English.

Where do I find the name the name and version of the word processor?

Sorry The program is Outlook Express 6 I fooled around with some of the
ideas I've received from you and Ken, Thanks to you both, and I have gotten
to where it does ask for a langaage setting, and yes you are right, it is set
to french. When I clink on it to change the language, there is a drop down
menu with: French(France) as the only setting available. How do I get around
that?

The only thing that I would think to do, is try to reinstall outlook
express. The big question is whether or not you still have your xp CD. If
you do, then stick it into the cd tray first. Then go to start > control
panel > add/remove programs > add/remove windows components.
Scroll down and uncheck outlook express. After it runs through this, go back
through and check outlook express again, it may(hopefully) give you an
option to install english as the language type. Once again, this is just a
conjecture, but the only one I can think of if french is the only language
being displayed... Maybe someone else has another idea though.
Hope this helps

Do you have Word 2007 installed on your computer? If that's the
case, take a look at this article.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some
languages in Outlook Express 6.0 after you install the 2007
Microsoft Office system
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974

Here are a couple of free spell checkers that you may find
helpful.

Spell Checker for OE
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.html

Spell Checker for OE 2.1
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952

I was able to get around this issue because I had a copy of
Office 2003. You can install the Proofing tools from the Office
2003 installation CD and it will restore the spell checking
capabilities in Outlook Express.

Good luck

You installed Office 2007 or one of its programs. See Ken's post for what
to do.

No, that can't work. Note that Outlook Express comes with no spelling
checker, neither English, nor French, nor any other language. It uses
the spell checker installed with Word or some other Microsoft Office
component. It's in Office that Vangie has to look for the problem.

_____

Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Works, and other word processors (even
Corel Draw has a spell check dictionary, at least for earlier versions) come
with a spell check dictionary. The original poster has still not identified
what word processors are installed which does have a spell checker.

Outlook Express does not have a spell check dictionary. You must have a
word processing program installed that provides the spell check function for
Outlook Express. Most likely you have Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, or
Microsoft Works, any of which provide spell check service for Outlook
Express. (Microsoft Works can come with or without Microsoft Word, but both
versions supply spell check services.)

If you don't have Word or Works installed, then look for another word
processor. Once you discover WHICH word processor, use the Help function to
discover how to set the spell check language.

Please let us know which word processor you have, and what you did to set
the language to English (there may be several variants of English listed.)
This will help others with the same problem.
