Dialing out with Outlook problem

Jim Scott

I recently got adsl and unplugged (from phoneline) and uninstalled my
dial-up modem.
When I returned to Outlook after not using it for a while I found I cannot
dial out from 'contacts' in MSOutlook. Advice on another ng tells me that I
need my old modem so I reconnected it and put it back in Device Manager. I
can now dial out using another application called 'Phonedeck', but Outlook
stubbornly refuses to 'see' the modem. I get the message that "an internal
error occurred in the automatic phone dialer. Close the dial phone box
dialog box and then open it again". That does not work, nor does an office
repair.
Any ideas?

One suggestion in Outlook 2003 Help is {from Outlook Contacts} to:

a.. Make sure the communications port is set up properly. On the Actions
menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call. Click Dialing Options,
click Line Properties, and then check the setup options selected.

Else, suggest you try an Outlook newsgroup.

Lol.
They sent me here, saying it was a dialer problem.

Yep, finger pointing.

However, you did say that you could dial out with "Phonedeck". That
indicates, to me, that the Windows XP interface to the modem and the modem
are operating correctly. That leaves the interface with Outlook. My first
suggestion would have been to run Office Detect and Repair, but you said
that did not help.

Outlook 2003 Help provides only a little information on dialing. Have you
check to see if you can dial from Outlook Express Address Book. {Tool,
Address Book. Tools, Action, Dial}. If dial now works {if you have no
entries, you can just add a temporary one}, then the finger again points to
Outlook. If it does not work, then the problem is likely in the shared
interface between Outlook Express and Outlook. At least you have more
information.
