Dialer

Hi,
I am on a dial-up ISP and will regretfully be on it for some time to come.
I am looking for a dialer program that will keep dialing until the best
possible connection is made with the ISP. I usual have to connect and
disconnect and connect again several times to get the best connection.

I am not looking for any kind of accelerator, just a dialer to get the best
possible connection . This is for a WindowsXP Home SP2.

Thank you,
Georgia

I am looking for a dialer program that will keep dialing until the best
possible connection is made with the ISP.

How would the dialer know what was best?

I knew a dialer app once that would carry on and on - dialling,
disconnecting and redialling - until it hit a specific IP range.

Is this what you mean?

What modem do you use? Some like those using Conexant chips can have min
and max acceptable connect speeds set. Other can auto-rate or connect at
a single speed. Your best connection may be fleeting as it will retrain
downwards if you have a marginal line but still show the original
connect speed. You would have to query the modem after the call to check
the speed at the end.

Yes, I am looking for a dialer that will keep dialing until a specific IP
range is obtained. I know that I had a dialer like this on Windows3.1. I
found an old program somewhere in a freeware site but could not get it to
work even using the Compatibility Mode.

I have a Conexant modem. The connection can range from about 28 to 51.
The bottom range is just not acceptable and I manually disconnect and
reconnect until the upper range is reached.

Unless it's your ISP modem pool that is all over the place the variation
will come from your line so don't be too tight with your limits. I find
that limiting the top speed reduces the chance of retraining which can
cause dropouts.

Georgia,

Then you are looking for a program which evaluates the connection speed
not the IP address range, correct?

Yes, I mean a program that will dial until a suitable connection speed is
obtained, not IP address range. My mistake in wording.

Hope you are dialling in on a freephone number :)

I want to thank everyone for their help. I do think that the Alexf Dialer
suggested by sno will meet my dial-up needs.
Thank you again,
Georgia
