Dial-Up TCP/IP Binding Problem

R

Rhys Owen

After installing the latest win2000 updates I found that
my dial up connection no longer connects (Error 720 - the
connection attempt failed because your computer and the
remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocol)
This problem is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article - 810979, however the fix that it describes does
not work for win2000 advanced server as it requires me to
remove TCP/IP and re-install, WINS,DHCP etc being
installed makes this difficult (I did manage to do what
the article says but this messes up my active directory,
domains etc big time). Does anyone please have another
way to sort this problem, it seems to have something to do
with the TCP/IP protocaol binding being lost from the dial-
up adapter config!!!

Please Help

Rhys,

I'm assuming that the dial-up connection is to a VPN server... This may
seem a bit simple, but have you tried creating deleting and re-creating al
dial-up connection? Also, can other clients connect to this VPN server or
is it just your computer? If it is just your computer, I might also try to
make sure that there are no devices working improperly in device manager,
update your modem with the latest drivers from the manufacturer website,
and also try reinstalling the modem and TCP/IP via device manager. Also,
you could try playing around with the protocols that you are trying to
connect with by going into the dial-up properties - security tab - advanced
settings - here you can allow all protocols and specify data encryption
optional. If no computers can connect to the VPN server via dial-up, then
I'd check out the server configuration. Make sure that you can connect to
yourself (on the VPN/RRAS server).

Also, by the way, there is a special procedure that you have to go through
in order to remove and reinstall TCP/IP on DCs. This process is described
in the following article which also has a link for Windows 2000 servers:
