Dial Up Connection Passwords

Having upgraded a machine from windows 98 to XP home the dial up setting are all over the place

The password insists on duplicating itself, so that when you go into an application such as outlook express to connect through the dial up connection in the 'password' box there are twice the number of characters that there should be
I've tried deleting the connection in the control panel and re-entering it from scratch, but this was no good - the same thing happened.
I've been told that XP has a backup of the dial up settings somewhere in the system files, and that I'll need to delete this backup to really start from scratch but I can't find this - can anyone shed any light
Thank

Kate;
That is normal.
It is a security measure to mask the actual # of characters in the
password.
Just ignore it and log in as usual.
