Hi,
Any helps to the following problem are greatly
appreciate:

For some reason, one of my W2K computer's Internet and
Network stop working for the past 3 day. I using DHCP for
connecting to the LAN, and there was no change in the
setting on the server/workstation. When I doing a
IPConfig check, I got the following:
***************************************
C:\Documents and Settings\ctran>ipconfig
Windows 2000 IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.73.185
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
********************************************

Normally the IP address should show 168.192.0.###, the
subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, and the Default
Gateway should be 192.168.0.1

looks like an APIPA address. Computer didn't get assigned an Ip from the
DHCP server (not connected or something) when it tried to renew it's lease.

That is an autonet IP address which is used when the client cannot get an
address from a DHCP server. Check your network cable, NIC, NIC driver and
hub.

Both answers are right on the money. I would also check
to see if the dhcp service is running and actually has ip
addresses to assign to clients.
I have experienced situations where this service on the
dhcp server has stopped due to an error, and just needs to
be restarted.

Hi,
Thanks you for all the feedback. I have found out that
the problem only happen to 1 computer. On that computer,
whenever I try to renew the ip address, I get the
following error message:
*******************************
C:\Documents and Settings\ctran>ipconfig /renew
Windows 2000 IP Configuration
The following error occurred when renewing adapter Local
Area Connection: An operation was attempted on something
that is not a socket.
*********************************

Any idea?

Thanks again for all you help.

Did you do an "ipconfig /release" before using the /renew command? You must do this in order to get rid of the APIPA address. However, if the machine still cannot connect to your DHCP server then it will recieve another APIPA address when you do a /renew. I hope this helps.

Thank you for all the help. I get the adapter and tcp/IP
remove and reinstalled, and that seem to fixing the
problem. Article 318584 have been very helpful.
