devices cannot be placed in the map HELP

The only way I could see the other two computers on my network was on the
Network map. It listed my other two computers as "The Following Devices
cannot be placed in the map". But I could see them at least! They could
see me. Now that is even gone, not sure why. I have a modem/router from my
isp Telus, DLink ADSL Router DSL604 that "can't be placed in the map"
either. It is quite old and they aren't in a hurry to give me a new one. I
am dual booting and everything is fine still in XP. How do I add them so
they show up in my network in Vista? I tried the wizard which suggested I
change to local area connection 5, which I did to no avail. I haven't even
tried to add my wireless Palm. Sorry if this is vague or has been answered
before. Networks just aren't my thing, I think they scare me!

Thank you,

Alix

I don't have a fix for you. But for what it's worth, I experienced the same
thing. It seems when first installed Vista I could see everything in the
LAN, wired and wireless XP computers, shared folders, shared printers,
everything. But eventually it all disappeared and now I only see the shared
folder from own Vista computer, an Internet icon, and another copy of that
icon in the "can't be shown" area.

The networking stuff has been screwy all along (since beta 1). I don't know
why. I've been putting off tackling that part of Vista until something more
reasonable came along. I'm hoping the next build is that
something-more-reasonable.

the network map uses LLTD - link layer topology discovery - to place
devices and computers on the map. rumoe has it that MS may have a QFE
for XP that will supply a LLTD responder that will allow XP computers
to show on the map. Vendors like DLink, etc. would have to supply
firmware updates that include LLTD capabilities.

When UPnP first arrived on the scene, vendors were slow to include
this capability in new devices and even slower to provide firmware
upgrades for existing devices. LLTD will proabably take the same
route.

Try typing \\computername in the Start Search box to see if you can connect
to your other computer(s). That used to work for me when my other computers
didn't show up in the "The Following Devices cannot be placed in the map."
Unfortunately, even that doesn't work anymore. Hopefully, RC1 will have
these bugs worked out.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I am glad that it isn't my
misunderstanding of networks that is causing the problems. I will keep
trying with every update and hopefully it will be working soon.
