Device connect sound question

In Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices, there is a button for "Device
connect" and one for "Device disconnect." (As, for example, if you plug or
unplug something into a USB port.)

My computer occasionally makes these sounds---always in pairs only seconds
apart---for no reason. (I have not plugged in or unplugged a device.) This
does not seem to cause any problem with the computer's operation.

Does anybody have any idea what would cause this to happen?

It is quite possible that some program is periodically checking to see if
anything has been connected.

That's what I figured. I thought it might show up in the event viewer--but
it didn't.
The computer works OK, but it kind of bugs me to know that something is
going on and I can' t figure out what it is.

I have found that its hard to track down, other than going through suspects
in the registry. For example, some HP software is set to check for periodic
updates, but there is no option for it in the software itself, just in the
windows registry. Next time you hear the sound you might check
Taskmanager... I know the feeling, it drives me nuts too when stuff is
going on without my permission.
