Desktops for each user account

I have XP Home. There are two user accounts: one
adminstrator and one limited account. When I upgraded
from Windows 98, my desktop from 98 became the desktop
for each account. The problem is, when I delete a
shortcut icon on the desktop of one user account, the
icon is also deleted from the other account. What
gives? I thought the idea was that XP kept each desktop
separate, so changes to one user account's desktop would
not effect the other user account's desktop.

Thank you in advance for your help

Hi,

It's because the icons are in the allusers folder. Move them to the
appropriate username desktop folder.

From:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop

To:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Desktop

When you delete from All Users, it affects everyone. When you work within a
user folder, it affects only them.

Thanks for your help on this. Funny thing is, I have two
Documents and Settings folders, one called "Documents and
Settings" and the other called "Documents and
Settings.000" The former had All Users, Default and one
of the user accounts, but not the other, so I created a
folder using that user account's name, and copied
everything from the All Users folder into it. In
the "Documents and Settings.000" folder, it has All
Users, Default and Sophia (a user account that was
deleted).

Hope I am not messing things up too much. Should I
delete the "Documents and Setting.000" folder? Should I
delete the icons in the All Users/Desktop folder, and
just have icons in the individual user account desktop
folders?

Thanks.

Hi,

It's because you reinstalled WindowsXP. Since the folder already existed,
the reinstall created a new one (appended with the .000).
