HELP!!!

Whilst all the shortcuts appear on the desktop, the icons have been replaced
by document symbols, and when double clicked they ask which file I wish to
associate them with.

When I go into file explorer & double click a program (one with an extension
of exe or com), nothing happens, yet if I double click a word file, or a
spreadsheet file Word & Excel come to life.

Am not sure If I will be able to do a system restore.

Just to add my 2cents:

My Dad's PC was like Clive_Burt described after my niece was surfin'.
This was b/4 I ran across Doug Knoxs' fixes. Luckily he had something
called "goback" that comes up during boot, b/4 windows appears, and it
worked. Next visit, I'll find out which "goback" it is.

(I kinda deduced that my niece clicked on a pop-up, got tired of
Lavasoft's registry modification notices, and closed everything out,
leaving a partially corrupted registry, turned off the 'puter and
snuck away. She even had the volume control muted, I guess so Dad
wouldn't hear anything incriminating. Since then, I had him build a
limited user for her and password his own.)

After reading about Doug's site here I dloaded all his fixes and saved
them.

My question is: How was Clive_Burt able to even get online to Doug's
site? Would I be able to get to my saved fixes if it happened to me?
