Desktop woes

I have XP home edition running on a 2.6 GB Dell Pentium 4. After a recent
startup, I lost everything on my desktop except the wallpaper--no start
button, task tray, or any of my desktop icons. I have tried running restore
to a prior date but it doesn't help. When I access the task manager
(control, alt, delete), I can access or run everything, including all my
files.
A couple of things make me suspect that something has happened to corrupt a
file necessary for the normal desktop display to load.
First, my computer had been off for a few days since I was gone. When I
started it up, it started normally, and I had several updates waiting to be
downloaded or installed (Windows security updates, StopZilla updates, McAfee
updates). I went ahead and processed the updates, but I delayed restarting,
because I wanted to do some other things (checking e-mail, downloading some
pictures from my digital camera, etc.). The computer locked up while I was
working, and when I restarted it, I got the empty desktop.
Second, when I try to run Explorer.exe through the task manager, it causes
the normal desktop display to flash for a couple of seconds. It will repeat
this cycle 15 or 20 times before it stops.
I would appreciate if anyone can shed some light on this.
Thanks
