Desktop theme changed on boot-up

Once in a while, I'll switch on my PC in the morning and the desktop theme
has changed to Windows XP, or so it appears. Actually, when I look at
what's selected in properties, the them is still set to my selection
(Classic, modified), but under the Appearance tab the Windows and buttons
drop down shows 'Windows XP style' selected.

I've not made this change and nobody else has access to the machine, so why
does this happen?

After you make your change you have to click Apply first before
clicking OK, to set and SAVE settings.

Can't be that because this was a theme that has been working OK for ages and
if I reboot without changing anything, it's back to the correct theme.

This happens just once in a while for no apparent reason.
