Desktop Shortcut Icons not working

T

My desktop shortcut icons on XP for connecting to
Internet Explorer and Outlook Express are not working.
They were until last nite when I ran an Ad-Aware scan.
Items were quarantined then deleted....perhaps I deleted
the active shortcuts too. Can someone tell me how to
activate the icons so they will work again?
Thanks!!!

For shortcuts, download and apply the LNK file association fix from:

You need to double click the ZIP file you downloaded and extract the REG file inside. Then double click the REG file to import the changes into your Registry.

Thanks....did that. And says the file was successfully
added to registry. But the shortcut icons are still dead.
Cannot pull up Internet Explorer or Outlook Express when
I click icons. What next?

Thanks so much for ur help!

Does it happen to all the shortcuts or the only two? If for all, type "regsvr32 /i shell32" in the run box and press Enter.

Unless you deleted the quarantined items that AdAware found, you can restore them.

Are you referring to standard desktop shortcuts, or the two particular ones on the new Start Menu?

Yep. I did delete the quarantined items from Ad-Aware.
The icon are the Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
icons I use to connect to the net from the desktop. These
are not working. I can get online by using Start and
Connect To.

Thanks again for replying.

Only happens with those two.

Did you try just creating new shortcuts pointing to

Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE

and

Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE

Recreate the shortcuts [see MVP Doug Knox's post]. Can you run iexplore.exe and msimn.exe in the RUN box and launch the applications?
