Desktop running XP Home Edition taking 30 minutes to boot

Hi

I have a desktop with Intel Celeron 2.6Ghz running Windows XP Home
Edition. It normally used to boot up in 2-3 minutes. However in the
last couple of days, it is been taking a long time to boot up - upto
30-35 minutes. This machine is one of 3 machines on a home network. It
is connected via a physical ethernet cable to a wireless DLINK
broadband router.

The screen stays black for this entire 30-35 minutes. At the end of it
however, I do get the XP login screen. And once I login, I am able to
start applications that seem to work fine. During this 30-35 minutes,
the HDD light on the computer is flashing orange rapidly. I also an
DVD-RW internal drive connected inside - and this drive constantly
flashing a green LED during this 30-35 minutes.

I looked at the event log and found the following warnings and errors
in the System Event log:

This machine also has a DVD-RW that I added later. And I have recently
having problems with it - I have not been able to burn DVDs in the
DVD-RW - Nero shows an "Power Caliberation error" on burning data DVD
discs in this DVD-RW. The DVD-RW is able to read CDs, DVDs and burn CDs
just fine.

Nero InfoTool shows the following:
- Primary IDE Channel
- Master: Maxtor - 4R080L0
DMA on
- Secondary IDE Channel
- Master: SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-348B
DMA on
Autorun on
- Slave: DVDRW IDE 16XDVD SM-348B <<...the DVDRW I am having

DMA off
Autorun on.

Can anyone advise me what to do next to diagnose / fix this problem?

Thanks
Bob

What do you get when you boot in safe mode? If you get into safe mode might
as well disable all your startups, run > msconfig > startup > disable all

Sounds like the stall in normal startup is due to a device problem, in which
case you could simply disconnet everything from the back of the pc except for
the monitor, keyboard and mouse. But you can get a better idea via safe
mode.....

PS. Until you resolve the issue try removing the Browser duties from
the machine. Go to:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

and change IsDomainMasterBrowser to No.

at the same key change MaintainServerList to No.

You can change these again later on. If you can't browse the network
properly (from any machine) assign the duties to another machine on your
network.
