'Desktop' message when I log on as new user

J

Jonathan Finney

I just bought a new Acer laptop with Win XP Home pre-installed.

I'm used to XP Pro and noticed that there's no Administrator account and
that the ones created during set-up are 'administrator' accounts.

For security reasons, I want to create an Administrator account and limit
the user account, so I created a new user account with administrator
privileges as the first step.

When I log on as the new user I get a Notepad window open on the desktop
(called desktop.txt) with the following text:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

(..except that it's not underlined, but I don't know how to stop Outlook
Newsreader doing this)

I have no idea what causes this, but it's obviously not right. Am I missing
some fundamental difference between XP Home and XP Pro?

Is there a different procedure for creating new users in XP Home?

Common problem.

Desktop.ini file opens in Notepad on Desktop

Notepad Starts With "[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\System32\Shell32.dll,-21787" When You
Start Your Computer

First of all, there *is* a built-in Administrator account. It is hidden
in Regular Mode in XP Home. To access it, start the computer in Safe
Mode. The default Administrator password is a blank.

There is no difference in creating users in XP Home. Here is information
on the error message you are getting:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=330132

It is a simple fix.

Thanks Wes. That's fixed it!

Unfortunately I still can't create an Administrator account because it says
the account already exists. The problem is I can't see the account as
there's no 'Local Users and Groups' section in Computer Management and I
can't log on because I get a message saying that I can't log on because of
'account restrictions'. This is realy weird and even Acer are stumped as to
why this should happen. Any ideas?

As I told you in my first answer to you:

"First of all, there is a built-in Administrator account. It is hidden

Mode. The default Administrator password is a blank."

So if you are trying to create an account called "Administrator" that is
why you can't - it already exists.

Sorry Malke. Didn't see this.

I don't have the laptop with me right now, but I'm sure you're right.
However, an administrator account that requires restarting in safe mode in
order to log on (sounds like that's what you're saying) is only of limited
use so I'll leave my account as an admin account and use that.

Thanks for the help guys!

See my reply to Malke's post. ..and thanks again. :)

BTW. Have you any ideas regarding my post about how to prevent Start-Up
programs from running when I log on as administrator (16/05)?
