After the initial installation of WIN Vista on my new HP Notebook, a
desktop.ini icon appeared on my desktop. When I try to delete or remove this
icon I get a warning: "If you remove (or move) this file, Windows or another
program might not work correctly." How can I safely get this icon off my
desktop?

By clicking ok and ignoring the error? That is what I would do anyway.

Type "Folder Options" in the Start Search pane, open it and under View
select "Hide protected operating system files".
