Desktop icons rearrange themselves

My desktop icons have started rearranging themselves when I turn on my
computer, and it's really annoying. How do I fix this?

I've heard that some viruses go into your system and start messing things
up, so maybe you should try scanning your computer with an antivirus
program.

Run a virus scan on general principles. But here is what I read about and
tried that worked for me...
-Right click in a blank area of Desktop.
-In resulting menu, select: Arrange icons by > Auto arrange IF "Auto
arrange" is checkmarked.
-Move Desktop items as wanted. See if it holds next boot-up.

I'll run a virus scan, but Auto arrange (and "lock web items," another
possible source of the problem i found on google) is unchecked.

Also, i've got the thing from kellys-korner-xp.com that lets you save
yoru desktop layout and restore it by right clicking on the desktop,
but i'm not too enamored with the idea of having to do that every time
my desktop refreshes, even though it's easy. Virus scans running now.

Okay, a McAfee scan turned up nothing but a few tracking cookies...
now what?
