My college aged daughter has a laptop running XP Home. She said that it
started to get very slow. She finally ran the antivirus and found about 30
issues. She had the program fix(delete?) the problems. After doing this,
she said that the desktop icons would not open any programs. She could not
open any programs from the Start>All Programs option either. I suspect that
she has acquired a virus from downloads that has changed the registry. I had
her run Spybot which found Alexa and 5 DSO Exploits. She ran an online virus
checker that did not find anything. She cannot run RegScrubXP or system
restore. When she clicks on a desktop icon, Windows asks her which program
she wants to use to run the file. She tried to reinstall Windows with the
OEM recovery disk. It ran through the setup, but did not change anything. I
am going to have her start the system in safe mode to see if the icons work.
I am going to have her download HijackThis also. I would appreciate any
suggestions. I am trying to walk her through the problem from several
hundred miles away on the phone.
