Desktop icon won't delete

When I downloaded and installed sp2, an icon was left on the desktop, named:

WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU

In properties, the program name is WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.ex

When I try to delete it, windows tells me that it's being used by another
application although no applications are running. Its properties says its 0
bytes long. I've tried rebooting and it still won't delete. Any suggestions?

The File you are referencing to is XP SP2, it's the entire Service Pack 2,

This is a very common issue within XP; however, not for this .exe.

When you downloaded it, did you save it to your Desktop? That is the only
time I have seen this icon on a Desktop. Deleting it, will not remove the
update. And I have never had a problem removing it. That said, see if
anything here helps, good luck and keep us posted.

It looks like the file is corrupt (0 bytes is the indicator). Try renaming
the file (example: badfile.exe) and then try a delete.

The icon, I think, is an artifact of a cancelled d/l of SP2. I did
successfully d/l sp2 and install it but this icon (perhaps from the first,
aborted d/l) remains.

I tried renaming - won't work.

I ran WhoLockMe and it tells me that explorer.exe is locking it. I can't
kill that process.

Did you try Kelly's suggestion:

Particularly the technique of ending Explorer with Task Manager and
deleting the file from a command prompt.

Using cmd and the task manager to stop and restart explorer did the trick.
Thanks a lot.
