Desktop has some how has odd folder options that I want gone

My desktop has somehow aquired some folder options that
are permanently listed on the left margin. about 1/4 of my
desktop is taken up by this "margin". The options listed
are: "Folder tasks" "Other Places" and "Details".
I would really like any help in returning my desktop
back to its original state, so that I only see my
wallpaper again. I am running Windows XP Home.
