Deploy to Smartphone device problem

I am developing an application using VS.Net 2003/Compact Framework for
Smartphone. I received a Smartphone device along with the Smartphone
Developer Bundle from Microsoft. My application works fine on the emulator
but does not deploy to the Smartphone device. Complains that the device is
not connected, eventhough the device is connected and recognized
successfully by ActiveSync. The Smartphone device has Smartphone 2002
running on it. So I installed the .Net Compact Framework runtime on it. Am
I missing something? Thanks for your help.

The .NET Compact Framework does not run on Smartphone 2002. It shouldn't
even install.
