DEP kills Windows Explorer???

Bill

I have a new Dell Inspiron 9300 with factory installed Win XP Pro SP2.
I have installed all security updates to date.

When I click on a file with the .mpg extension in Windows Explorer (it
is a 3.8 gb mpeg2 video file) to select it I get an immidiate error
dialog that says "Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows" in the
title bar. The error message is, "To help protect your computer,
Windows has closed this program. Name: Windows Explorer Publisher:
Microsoft Corporation"

What causes this and how can I fix it? As an alternative how can I
disable Data Execution Prevention?

Is it one particular mpg file or all mpg files? If it is one file the file
may be corrupted. If it is all mpg files you may have a bad codec installed.
What program do you use to view mpg files? The program may have a bug in it.
If DEP causes a problem it can be an indication of a bug in a program.

It is some but not all MPG files.

The error does not happen when I double click the file to view it. It
happens when I single click the file to select it. Since all I am doing
is selecting the file in Explorer (the ultimate goal was to copy it) I
do not see how a codec or program other than Explorer could be involved.

By the way, I can copy or move the files from the command line with no
problem.

Thanks for the reference. If I understand that article correctly the
only way to disable DEP for Explorer is to disable it globally. Is that
correct?

Disableing DEP globally did fix the problem.

I misunderstood your original post. I thought you were trying to run the
file. When you right click on a file what options show up? It may be some
program to view mpg files has added something to the context menu. When you
click on a file with explorer windows gets the file information in case you
want to display a preview. This may involve other programs especially with
multimedia files. What is the default mpg viewer?
