DEP causing problems

While running the the latest version of Windows Defender something
crashed and logged me off. When I logged on again there was a message
from DEP saying that it had had to shutdown the "Application layer
Gateway service".
Next day when powering up the system rebooted several times. When I
finally got to login there was a message from DEP saying that it had to
stop the "Windows Explorer" service and it then shutdown XP.
Anyone know what's going on?

I just had the same problem while trying to download a printer driver from
the HP website. The download was about 80-90% complete when I was informed
that it had shut down to protect my computer. Then I went through a series
of shutdowns and restarts before I could regain use of my computer.

I am also running XP...2003 Home Edition SP3. I hope someone around here
can provide some useful insights. I removed the stuff that had been
downloaded and now I am afraid to try again.
