Hi all;

I am now on my 4th older computer in 6 months...ick...anyway, having an issue getting sound to work on a Dell Optiplex GXi.

When I ran Fedora Core 3 on it, sound was fine. Couldn't understand Linux driver setup for modem, and since I need a daily tool now, put off Linux again for later and put on badold Win98SE instead...

Everything I've read suggests that the onboard sound should run off a Crystal CS4236 driver. After downloading and installing (?) various versions, I still have no sound, and three problem devices (PCI ethernet controller, PCI multimedia audio device, and an unknown device).
Onboard sound is enabled (I already figured that, since it ran under Linux!), I don't know where to look for the audio chipset, as I've always used cards.

I wish I could have stayed with Fedora core 3 (I'm learning it in school) but in addition to modem confusion, windows in Gnome weren't displaying properly (minimized windows showed desktop, some windows wouldn't display at all until you ran the cursor over them) - I will be off to LinuxQuestions, and harassing my teacher, but if anyone has any ideas on those two Linux items, cool...

Dell Optiplex GXi
-256 RAM (slowspeed)
-10 GB HD
-Pentium 3, 733 MHz
-onboard video (Linux detected as Intel 810, which was crucial info when I installed Winblows...)
-onboard sound (crystal cs4236???)
-EZ Media Intel Chipset V.90/92 56Kbps Voice/Fax modem (includes software for Linux)
etc.
