Deleting unwanted "Temporary" files

H

Hickory

A web site has downloaded several files (gif, css and js) to my Local
Settings/Temporary Internet Files folder. I do not want them on my PC since
I don't know what they do and they were downloaded without my knowledge. I
have tried to delete them, but can not do so. I used CCleaner to remove
them, but when I reboot, theye are still there. They seem to be "permanent"
and I can not remove, rename, edit or anything. Properties tell me nothing.
In Windows Explorer, they file name is truncated and the internet address is
listed.

How can I get rid of them? I will not go back to this web site.

Thank you very much for any help.

Malware. Try Malwarebytes Antimalware and Superantispyware.

Thank you Mark, but I don't think they are malware. They came specifically
from the RasmussenReports.com web site and appear to be related to the
Rubicon Project.

Try deleting the files by first starting your computer in safe mode.
If no joy, google for "delete undeletable file".

Yes, Peter. They have been there since last Saturday, I think. I have
booted many times since I first noticed them.

Maybe you can try FileASSASSIN or Killbox to force a delete.

In the immortal words of Nancy Sinatra, "You've been messin' where you
shouldn'ta been messin'." The Local Settings folder is "hidden" for a
reason: if you don't understand what you're doing, you can create
problems for yourself.

Files in Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files are used by Internet
Explorer as its cache, which enables it to display previously-viewed
pages faster. Cookies are also stored in TIF. If you want to clear
this folder, do so through IE's Internet Options dialog:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/customizing/clearcache.mspx

Although CCleaner also deletes TIF files (as well as other files that it
deems "crap"), the files will re-appear the next time you go to the website.
